Glendalough Distillery is the first to use the rare and exotic Mizunara oak, embarking on a journey into the unknown—the union of Irish single malt and Japanese oak. Mizunara is sourced from Hokkaido, the northernmost volcanic island of Japan, creating a fusion between the most sought-after oak in the whisky world and a fine Irish single malt in a classic, historic style, now considered rare and limited. Some even regard it as the finest whisky style in the world. The unique Mizunara oak trees tend to grow in a twisted and irregular manner and are notoriously difficult for coopers to work with due to their high porosity. However, this is precisely where the advantage lies—the whisky penetrates deeper into the wood, imparting exotic fruit and dark chocolate notes. The whisky was launched in 2022 and has since won prestigious awards. Aroma: Vibrant, fruity, and floral. Palate: A smooth and luxurious mouthfeel with dark chocolate-orange, wood, and cinnamon- hallmarks of Mizunara maturation. Finish: Long, with toasted oak layers and delicate, complex notes of spice and chocolate that linger on the palate.
